Tokyo!
Disclaimer: For everyone, but especially the ladies of the Gabetron Chronicles, I apologize if the followign post offends you in any way and by no means do I intend to offend any of you. I'd have to say that my female friends help keep the bar high in America when it comes to appearances.
So I was biking today on my way home from work and then later to the store which was probably a total of 20 minutes on a bike and I recalled the words of stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan who said something close to the following:
"There are some gorgeous women in New York! It's like every 15 minutes I'm falling in love. Every time I'm on the subway I think, 'There's the women of my dreams, no she's getting off... Oh there's the women I'm going to marry...and she just gave me the finger....wow that's the love of my, wait that's a man."
He's a funny comedian but he actually makes a good point. In Tokyo, much like New York there are a LARGE number of very attractive women. The catch is that in Tokyo there are more.
I realize how shallow and piggish this makes me sound, but I'm just being honest. On my bike ride it felt like every couple of yards I was seeing one of the most beautiful in Tokyo, or at least Higashikurume. It's crazy! And when you go downtown, forget about it. You could throw a rock and hit someone whose still beautiful even with a black eye from the rock you just through. If I could only speak the language! I'm also a little curious as to how conscious they are of there attractiveness. There's a lot of variables I guess, just like there are in the U.S.
I tried to rationalize the seeming phenomenon, and I'm really pretty sure it's actually simple. I think there are two basic reasons for such a collection of attractive people (because it's not just the women, but they are the ones whom I notice more):
1. It's a metropolis, or rather THE metropolis, and lots of people (especially more attractive people wanting to become famous) come here for an opportunity.
2. I'm actually willing to bet it has a very similar rate of attractive to non-attractive people. Again the catch here being that instead of one 8 million that Chicagoland has, or the 18 million that New York has, Tokyo has 35 million. Essentially by default there have to be more attractive people here than probably any where else in the world.
All that being said, I'll end with this, as attractive as most of the women here are dentistry/orthodontics have just caught on in Japan relatively recently. That is to say, many of these women are extremely attractive until they smile, at which point your left trying to process the contradiction that you are beholding between her face and mouth. "It's so true, though" according to my roommate, "but it's part of the charm." I guess it is, i'm still adjusting to it I guess, but it is a little jarring. I'll also say that it's not everyone who has such issues.
One last thing, a shout out and belated Birthday wish to one of the most beautiful women I know, Happy Birthday Christina! I love you, sis. Sorry I haven't been able to get in contact with you, my internet is shoddy at best and I get by because I get a weak signal from my neighbors. Once I get passed the espousing of frustration and a failing modem I'll call.
Also a Happy belated-Birthday to a man whose very much like/is a brother to me, Matthew Grice. Congrats on reaching 24, I hope it's eventful, but maybe not as eventful on a global scale as my 25th year has been. I love you, man.
That's all for now, comment at your own risk,
Peace out!

Gabriel,
ReplyDeleteThank you for thinking of me. I am enjoying your posts as you share all the neat experiences that you are having. That video you posted was crazy funny with that Napoleon Dynamite feel. I loved that movie:) D-uh!
I am doing well. Some of my friends got together the night before my birthday at Mom and Dad's and we had a party -- it was fun, talking about all my beautiful friends.
I expect to meet one of your beautiful lady friends before your year is up. I think you are really ready for it and I hope you don't mind me saying. However, if I am just wishful thinking I will be patient and trust that all good things come when you are patient.
Well, I guess I am going to say good bye.
I love you and I am proud of you and most of all I am praying for you,
Your sis,
Christina
Hey Hey!

Not piggish at all, Gabe! I thought the same thing when I lived in Korea, and I meant it in the most straight, objective, non-sexual way possible. I don't know as much about Japanese culture, but I know that in Korea, physical appearance is very highly valued, so people put more time and money into their looks than in other parts of the world. This could be a reason why Japanese women in Tokyo look so nice, in addition to your theory on people making an extra strong effort for opportunity. The thing, too, is there is a lot of wealth in metropolitan areas, and lets be honest, having money definitely helps us upkeep our appearances. Oh, and another thought, people walk a lot more in urban centers, so they're generally more fit, therefore may seem more attractive. And to conclude, Asians are just plain sexy. What can I say?? Anyway, how's that for a sort of pretentious first comment on your blog!? P.S. GABE PARTY!
