Yesterday we had a typhoon blow thru. It was serious enough that they cancelled classes because of transportation concerns. When it gets too windy they shut down the trains so they don't get blown of the tracks.
I had been through hurricanes before living in Virginia, but this was a completely different experience. In Japan, all the buildings are built to withstand earthquakes, not hurricanes/typhoons. I wasn't expecting anything serious and was actually looking forward to seeing what the clouds were going to do.
It was not at all what I expected. In Virginia, you're inside and all the doors and windows are made specifically to with stand the wind and the rain. I guess they are to in Japan, but they don't have storm doors and the windows don't seal.
It had been raining all day, and as I came home from a half-day of work it was really evident. What we call a "river" normally functions more like a stream. It's normally one to two feet deep and crystal clear. However, yesterday it was a rushing river. It wasn't a rapid, but the water was gushing through. There's an even smaller stream closer to my house and it looked like it was about 4 feet higher than normal.
The wind didn't start to pick up until about 2pm and boy did it. The doors rattled, the windows were shaking. I tried to take a nap but it was way too noisy and I could feel my bed shutter with each gust of wind. You could hear the wind coming from down the street. It would start as a little whistle and quickly became a roar as the wind rushes past my window. At one point I peaked out my bathroom window to see small trees being blown nearly horizontally.
The wind carried on until 8pm prompt when it literally just stopped. It was quite remarkable. When I woke up this morning, it was absolutely gorgeous. The sun was shining, skies were blue, no cloud in sight.
A great day for a run.
Now, that typhoon Roke has passed on from Tokyo it has moved up north. It's actually turned into a very serious situation. It's caused lots of flooding in the temporary housing that has been provided for those who lost everything in the earthquake months ago. It's a discouraging situation and I couldn't imagine being in their position. Please keep them in your prayers and if your led and able to, donate money as well.
I can't express the amount of devastation that has taken place there and the pictures only begin to tell the story. Now these people have been displaced again and are forced to begin again, again.
Peace out!

p.s. Today was the 7th day in the past 9 that I've gone running and one of those other days I played basketball. Basically, it's a work in progress.
